University's overspending to blame for tuition rise
Letter to the Editor; Catonsville Times; 11/19/03
In response to Brian S. Bailey's letter, titled "Ehrlich's Cuts Put College Out of Middle Class Reach," in the Times Nov. 5:
Mister Bailey failed to note that the governor does not set tuition rates.
Does Mister Bailey know that the top 81 employees in the University System of Maryland are paid a combined $14 million in salary ($172,839 average)? Cars, homes and pensions are not included in the $14 million figure.
Does Mister Bailey remember that Kathleen Kennedy Townsend used University System of Maryland personnel to support her initiatives as lieutenant governor?
Does Mister Bailey know that the president of UMBC has had an 82 percent increase in salary since 1998?
Perhaps Brian should be asking why some of his professors only instruct three credit-hours per semester. Why don't they carry a teaching load equal to his credit hours? The numbers show they get paid far more per credit than he pays per credit.
Brian, don't blame the governor; look inside your glass house.
